Before the call
Check light, sound and camera height
Place a light in front of you rather than behind you, test the microphone and close other apps that may be using the camera.
Keep the screen near eye level and choose a background that lets you relax instead of constantly checking what is visible.
The first minute
Greet clearly and choose one easy subject
Say hello, allow a reply and ask a question you can both answer. You do not need to explain your entire day before the other person speaks.
Look toward the camera for the greeting, then use the screen naturally. Constant camera eye contact can feel less relaxed than a normal balance.
Your expectation
Aim for a good exchange, not a guaranteed outcome
A first video chat may last a few minutes or become a longer talk. Measure success by whether you listened, responded and stayed genuine.
Finish clearly when the conversation ends. A positive close leaves both people with a better final moment.
